Loreto Aprutino

Loreto Aprutino, fittingly described as "A City of Art and Home of Olive Oil" rests peacefully in a knoll, an ancient Roman site called Larentum so named for its many bay laurels, overlooking the Tavo River Valley. Loreto Aprutino is a Comune (Borough) and a Paese (Town) in the Province of Pescara in the Abruzzo Region of Italy.

Loreto's economy has been always driven by the production of olive oil and wine so much so that the olive oil industry is almost as old as its ancient monasteries, churches, palaces and castles. The Olive Oil Museum of Loreto, a beautifully preserved ancient non-working oil mill, is a prime example to its past, present and future. In the past Loreto was also renowned for knife-making and hand painted ceramics.

Almost 20% of the production of superior quality extra virgin olive oil in the D.O.P zone of Aprutino-Pescarese takes place in Loreto Aprutino. The chief variety used is the fruit of the Dritta, a cultivar unique to Loreto Aprutino together with Leccino, Toccolano and Frantoio.
